Motor vehicle accidents: Several hurt in Colorado crash

A serious accident involving three vehicles has sent several people to the hospital, according to local law enforcement. Police in Colorado Springs responded to the crash just after 6 p.m.on  the evening of April 11. As with many motor vehicle accidents of this type, police are still trying to determine precisely what caused the crash, and charges may be forthcoming against at least one driver involved.

According to the limited information provided in the report, it appears a vehicle was attempting to navigate a left-hand turn when the driver reportedly ran a red light. This caused a three-car pileup in the intersection involving an unknown number of people. Colorado Springs has not yet instituted the use of red light cameras at that intersection, as they are planned to come online later in the spring. As a result, there is some confusion as to the specifics of the crash.

Several people were reportedly taken to hospitals with injuries that were not specified. Police have not made public the names of the people involved, nor the extent of their injuries, but it does not appear that any fatalities resulted from the accident. However, given the accident was predicated by a driver error, charges could yet be filed

If the driver who ran the red light is charged, he or she could face fines or even jail time. However, Colorado law still allows victims of motor vehicle accidents additional legal options even if no criminal charges are filed. The injured parties are entitled to file a personal injury suit against the driver in civil court, and if sufficient evidence of the driver's material contribution to the accident exists, the court could choose to pay damages to the injured party.
