Motor vehicle accidents: 1 dead in 3-car crash

One person is dead following a three-car accident on U.S. 36, according to local sources. The Colorado State Patrol responded to the crash, which also seriously injured four other people. So far, no charges have been filed against any of the drivers involved, but as with most motor vehicle accidents, this one is still under investigation.

Details about the crash are still being determined by crash reconstruction teams, but it has been confirmed that a sports car and two SUVs were involved in the accident. The accident occurred around 6 p.m. the evening of March 31 at the intersection of Longmont Dam Road and U.S. 36 near Lyons. The driver of the sports car, who has not been identified at this time, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A child was airlifted to a local children's hospital with injuries described as severe. A man, a woman and a second child were also taken by ambulance to a local hospital in Longmont. Their conditions are unknown at this time. The highway remained closed for several hours after the accident to allow police to investigate the scene for possible causes of the accident, but they have not formally determined a cause at this time.

Depending on the outcome of the Colorado police investigation, charges could be filed against either of the remaining two drivers, but the deceased driver cannot be criminally charged posthumously. Regardless of whether criminal charges are filed, once a responsible party is identified, the injured parties and/or the family of the deceased are entitled under state law to file personal injury/wrongful death suits against that individual in civil court. Victims of motor vehicle accidents can be awarded damages by the court if sufficient evidence of driver culpability is presented.
