Motor vehicle accidents: Colorado Springs crash kills 1

A serious accident shut down sections of Interstate 25 on the afternoon of Feb. 3, according to local sources. Officers in Colorado Springs responded to the crash that claimed the life of one man and injured another individual. Fatal motor vehicle accidents must be carefully investigated to determine their cause, which can cause significant backup of traffic while police scour the scene.

The report states that around 4:30 p.m. a southbound SUV reportedly struck another SUV before running into a concrete barrier. The details of these impacts are not wholly described in the report, but it was confirmed by authorities that the male driver of the first SUV was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, who has also not been identified publicly by police, was also injured. That individual was taken to a local hospital in reportedly stable condition.

The driver and passenger of the other SUV were unharmed in the impact. Police are not sure what caused the initial collision, but they have not ruled out any factors at this time, including intoxication, driver error or recklessness. Their investigation into the accident scene lasted some four hours, and no further information is currently available.

Depending on the cause, drivers who are found responsible for causing motor vehicle accidents can be dealt with harshly by Colorado law. However, in the case where one or more drivers are killed, posthumous criminal charges are not filed against those who have passed away. Nevertheless, if a driver who is killed in a collision is found to have materially contributed to an accident that injured another person, that accident victim is entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver's estate in civil court.
