Motor vehicle accidents: 2 dead in Colorado

Police have identified two people who tragically lost their lives in a single-car accident near Kremmling. Colorado State Patrol has chosen to release the identities of these two individuals in the midst of their investigation. As with most motor vehicle accidents, the investigation will take time to complete, but criminal charges will not be forthcoming as the driver was among the deceased.

According to the limited information available so far, it appears a single vehicle driven by a 37-year-old Kremmling man was driving on Grand County Road 1 when the accident occurred. The Colorado State Patrol believes the vehicle exited the road for reasons unknown before careening off a cliff gauged to be at a 70 to 80 degree drop-off. It is unclear at this time where the car exited the road, as the cliff extends some 400 yards away from the roadway.

The driver and his 26-year-old female passenger were both dead when they were found. The driver had been ejected from the vehicle and was found about 300 feet away. The passenger, who appeared to have been wearing a seat belt, was found dead in her seat. Police only responded to the accident after it was reported by a road worker the morning after the crash is believed to have taken place.

Motor vehicle accidents with no clear cause must be stringently investigated, which is what the Colorado State Patrol is undertaking at this time. Accidents can be caused by driver error, intoxication, road conditions and a host of other potential factors, which is why investigators will work to narrow down what really happened. It may be possible for the family of the deceased passenger to file a wrongful death suit against the driver's estate in civil court, based upon evidence that the driver was materially responsible for the accident.
